The Higgs Boson and the Two Infinities -- Le Boson de Higgs et les Deux Infinis

17 Jul 2014 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm, University Paris-Diderot, Paris, France
Prof. Michel Spiro (CEA/IRFU,Centre d'etude de Saclay Gif-sur-Yvette (FR))

Abstract: The recent discovery of the Higgs Boson by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the Lord of Rings, sheds new light on the intimate connection between infinitely small elementary particles, the nature of the quantum vacuum, and the infinitely large (the first nanoseconds of our Universe). I discuss this long - term collective quest...the Fellowship of the Rings...and the scientific, technological, economic, and societal benefits of this global - scale endeavor. I describe a strategy to further unravel the mysteries of infinitesimal matter and of the observable Universe as a future worldwide endeavor...the Return of the Ring.

Arts, Research and High Tech: the interconnected XXI century New World

Performance gathering representatives from Arts, Fundamental and Applied research and High tech Firms.

21 Jul 2014 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm, Auditorium of the Institute Mutualiste Montsouris, Paris, France

Abstract: High speed and high data transfer, related novel telecom technologies and massive data computing techniques, high level real time processing of the information, simulations (modelling), 3D visualization techniques are common requirements in present and future fundamental and applied research fields and therefore in our day-to-day life.

It requests closer and closer collaboration between research and high tech industry in several areas. It impacts and even revolutionizes more and more our educational and cultural lives. Arts are as usual a reflect of our sensitive perception of how in the new interconnected world, we manage to get somehow used to cope with these new tools and the access to a tsunami - like flow of information they pour on us.

It is organized as a theatre play. The actors are representatives of related high tech, of fundamental and applied research worlds and of the Arts and the interconnection between these 3 pillars of our Society is the theme of this play. An audio-visual performance by numerical artists will conclude the event.

This event has been recorded on video, soon to be available.

It is organized as a screenplay with the contributions of:

Cartoon from INTEL on « why Big Data is needed in the real world »

Dr. Yusik Kim (IBM Research NL)

ASTRON IBM  Collab. on Exascale Technology the Dome project »

Dr. York Haemisch (Philips Digital Photon Counting),

"How Disruptive Technologies can change Medical Imaging and the associated increasing demands on data processing"

Dr Robert Patti (Tezzaron Semiconductors CEO),

« Big Data and HPC, why does it requires 3D integration ? »

Prof. Ian Shipsey and Dr. Aurore Savoy-Navarro

« LHC & Big Data for Frontier Exploration Beyond the Higgs »

« Computing the Universe » 3D movie produced by CEA Saclay

Dominique Roland, Director of Center of Arts of Enghien, City for Numerical Arts, labelled as Creative City by UNESCO since 2013,

« Arts, Sciences et technologe a la Croisee des Mondes Sensibles »

Cyrille Henri & Nicolas Montgermont interpreting an audio-visual performance of their creation « Egregore »

Astronomy in 2033: What we will (and won’t) know about the Universe

15 Jul 2013 - 8:00pm - 9:30pm, University of Oxford, UK

Dr. Chris J. Lintott, Researcher and Citizen Science Project Lead, University of Oxford

Abstract: Astronomy is undergoing a quiet revolution - new telescopes and new techniques being built and developed right now will change our view of the Universe for good. In this lecture, Sky at Night presenter Chris Lintott will peer into the future and predict what we will - and won't - know in twenty years' time.
